6th South American Athletic Coaches Association Congress.

Location: Iquique - Chile.

Introduction:
Prior to the opening of the Iberoamerican Championships held in Iquique Chile, from 13 - 15 June 2008, the South American Athletic Coaches Association celebrated its 6th Annual Congress.
Forty two coaches representing most of the countries which participated in the Iberoamerican Championships, gave a remarkable attendance to this meeting hosted at the conference room of Pratt Hotel, on the evening 12 June.

ASEA Report:

Oscar Gadea, ASEA President addressed the members. A deep analysis of actions and goals achieved, as well as proposals and targets for ASEA were covered, implying in their achievements the importance of interaction and complement. Three seminars had been scheduled for this year, one was already held during the South American Race Walk Cup, in Cuenca – Ecuador, while the others are; the Congress we are reporting on, and a seminar following the Half Marathon World Championship to be held in Río de Janeiro, October 12, 2008.
But undoubtedly, the most important announcement had to do with the goal of publishing a Technical Yearbook, containing the experiences, expertise and methods of renowned coaches.
Moreover, Gadea also highlighted the fact that nine out of thirteen countries, have established its National Coaches Association so far.

Technical Congress:

Technical aspects were addressed in three presentations followed with high interest by the audience.

Guillermo Chiaraviglio (ARG), shared his points of view about key technical aspects related with the pole vault event. Chiaraviglio, coach of  his son, German Chiaraviglio, world youth pole vault champion (Canada 2003) and medalist at the last World Cup in Athens, also referred to technical aspects and sound training concepts they both learnt during their work with Vitaly Petrov, in Formia – Italy, with whom they are working since 2003.

Carlos Burón (ESP), shot put coach, is personal coach of Manuel Martínez, who has been a world level shot putter for many years, Olympic and World Championships finalist several times, two times fourth in OG, and two times medalist in WCH, as well as European medalist many times.
Burón made a deep analysis of linear and rotational techniques, and the implications of strength in both techniques, and related them to  mechanical aspects.
Key to his presentation was the element of speed in the delivery phase, as a consequence of the previous phases and proper body position. “Slight misalignments may produce a poor performance, despite high levels of strength”, he concluded.

Katsuiko Nakaya (BRA), national coach of sprints and hurdles events in Brazil, is also directly responsible of the 4 x 100 meters event. He shared his particular approach for the preparation and training of the technical aspects of this event, in which Brazil, under his guidance, has reached not only World and Olympic Games finals, but medals in these levels as well. He supported his presentation with practical data and showed videos of the technical workouts performed by members of the relays.

The presentations were followed by a round table, in which the keynote speakers answered several questions made by their colleagues.
